EBT & LAPTOP

Free Laptop With EBT

Having an EBT card does not automatically qualify you for a free government laptop. SNAP participation can connect a household to certain low-income eligibility pathways, but the old federal ACP laptop benefit has ended. Current laptop opportunities usually come from separate schools, nonprofits, local programs or private device promotions.

QUICK ANSWER NO AUTOMATIC LAPTOP BENEFIT

Does EBT get you a free laptop in 2026?

Not automatically. There is no current federal rule that gives every EBT or SNAP household a free laptop simply because it receives food assistance.

SNAP can establish eligibility for programs such as Lifeline, but Lifeline provides a communications-service discount rather than a federal laptop allowance.

Some schools, nonprofit organizations, community programs or private companies may use SNAP participation as one way to demonstrate financial need for a separate computer program. Those offers have their own eligibility rules, inventory and costs.

01 · EBT IS NOT THE PROGRAM

The card and the benefit behind it are not the same thing.

“Free laptop with EBT” is a popular search because an EBT card is visible proof that a household may receive public assistance. But EBT stands for Electronic Benefits Transfer. It is a system used to deliver benefits.

SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is one program commonly delivered through an EBT card.

When another assistance program asks whether you receive SNAP, it is the underlying SNAP participation that may matter for eligibility, not simply possession of the plastic EBT card.

CARD EBT

Electronic system used to access eligible benefits.

PROGRAM SNAP

A qualifying assistance program for Lifeline.

DEVICE Laptop

Requires a separate device offer or assistance program.

SNAP FOOD BENEFIT
02 · CAN YOU BUY A LAPTOP WITH SNAP EBT?

SNAP benefits are not a computer-purchase fund.

SNAP benefits are intended for eligible food purchases at authorized retailers. A laptop is not an eligible SNAP food item.

This distinction matters because “free laptop with EBT” can incorrectly sound as though someone can use their SNAP balance to purchase computer hardware.

WHAT EBT CAN DO IN A LAPTOP PROGRAM It may help show participation in SNAP when a separate organization accepts SNAP as proof of low-income eligibility.

That is different from spending SNAP food benefits on the laptop.

03 · WHERE THE GOVERNMENT LAPTOP CLAIM CAME FROM

A real federal computer discount existed, but it belonged to ACP.

FORMER PROGRAM ACP

Affordable Connectivity Program

ACP helped eligible households with broadband costs and also included a one-time connected-device benefit.

FORMER BENEFIT $100

Up to $100 toward a device

The discount could apply to an eligible laptop, desktop computer or tablet purchased through a participating provider.

CURRENT STATUS ENDED

Not a 2026 enrollment benefit

ACP stopped providing benefits in 2024, so its laptop discount should not be advertised as a current federal opportunity.

ACP BENEFITS ENDED JUN 01 2024
04 · THE FORMER ACP LAPTOP DISCOUNT

Even the old federal benefit did not mean every household received a $0 laptop.

Under ACP, an eligible household could receive a one-time discount of up to $100 toward an eligible laptop, desktop computer or tablet offered by a participating provider.

The household had to contribute more than $10 but less than $50 toward the connected device. Availability also depended on the participating provider.

HOUSEHOLD CONTRIBUTION More than $10, less than $50

That program has ended. Websites that still present ACP enrollment or an ACP laptop benefit as currently available are using outdated information.

05 · WHAT STILL EXISTS IN 2026

Lifeline continues, but it is not a laptop replacement for ACP.

Lifeline is an ongoing federal program that helps qualifying consumers reduce the monthly cost of eligible phone, internet or bundled communications service.

SNAP participation is one way a household may qualify for Lifeline. Medicaid and several other assistance programs can also establish eligibility.

The key difference is that Lifeline does not include the former ACP connected-device discount. Qualifying for Lifeline therefore does not create a federal right to a laptop.

Our Lifeline free phone guide explains the current communications benefit in more detail.

LIFELINE CAN HELP WITH SERVICE
  • Phone service
  • Internet service
  • Qualifying bundled service
DO NOT ASSUME IT PROVIDES HARDWARE
  • A guaranteed laptop
  • A guaranteed Chromebook
  • A computer of your choice
06 · CURRENT LIFELINE ELIGIBILITY

SNAP is useful for eligibility, even though it does not provide the laptop.

A household can potentially qualify for Lifeline through income or participation in certain assistance programs.

SNAP Qualifying program

SNAP participation can establish eligibility for the Lifeline communications benefit.

MEDICAID Qualifying program

Medicaid is another standard program-based Lifeline route.

SSI Qualifying program

Supplemental Security Income can establish eligibility.

HOUSING Federal assistance

Certain Federal Public Housing Assistance programs qualify.

VETERANS Pension benefit

Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit is a recognized eligibility route.

TRIBAL Additional programs

Consumers on qualifying Tribal lands can have additional program-based eligibility routes.

Qualifying for Lifeline does not mean qualifying for a laptop.

Lifeline eligibility can help establish financial need in some contexts, but a laptop program must have its own rules and device offer.

07 · 2026 INCOME ROUTE

Households can also qualify for Lifeline based on income.

Lifeline’s standard income route uses 135% of the applicable Federal Poverty Guidelines.

These figures can help explain whether a household may qualify for Lifeline. They do not create a federal laptop benefit.

2026 48 contiguous states, D.C. and territories
135%
Household size Maximum annual income
1 person $21,546
2 people $29,214
3 people $36,882
4 people $44,550
5 people $52,218
6 people $59,886
7 people $67,554
8 people $75,222

Add $7,668 for each additional person in these locations. Alaska and Hawaii use different income limits.

08 · WHERE TO LOOK FOR A LAPTOP NOW

The useful opportunities in 2026 are usually outside the old ACP benefit.

Availability varies by location and organization, so these are categories to investigate rather than guaranteed national benefits.

01 EDUCATION

School technology programs

K-12 schools may issue Chromebooks or laptops for coursework. Some devices are loans and must be returned.

02 COLLEGE

Student device assistance

Colleges may provide loaner computers, emergency technology funds or device-access programs for eligible students.

03 COMMUNITY

Nonprofit computer programs

Community organizations may distribute donated or refurbished computers using their own financial-need requirements.

04 LIBRARY

Laptop lending

Some public libraries provide computers, hotspots or temporary laptop-lending options to local residents.

05 LOCAL

Digital inclusion programs

Cities, counties and community initiatives can periodically offer device assistance or refurbished computers.

06 PRIVATE

Low-cost computer offers

Private programs may sell affordable refurbished hardware to qualifying households. Read the full price and warranty terms.

EDU STUDENT DEVICE ACCESS
09 · STUDENTS MAY HAVE DIFFERENT OPTIONS

A school may be a better starting point than an EBT laptop advertisement.

Students sometimes have access to technology assistance that is unrelated to federal SNAP or Lifeline rules.

Before paying a website that advertises a “government laptop,” ask the school, college or university whether it provides loaner devices, technology grants, emergency support or computer-lab access.

A student’s SNAP participation may be relevant to certain low-income assistance programs, but each program determines its own documentation and eligibility rules.

10 · CHOOSE THE DEVICE FOR THE JOB

A cheap tablet and a useful laptop are not interchangeable.

TABLET Portable access

11 · CHECK THE LAPTOP BEFORE YOU ACCEPT THE DEAL

Low price is useful only when the computer can do what you need.

MODEL Exact hardware

Ask for the manufacturer and model rather than relying on a generic laptop image.

CONDITION New or refurbished

Previously owned hardware can still be useful, but its condition should be disclosed.

MEMORY RAM

Very limited memory can make modern web browsing and multitasking frustrating.

STORAGE SSD capacity

Check how much usable storage remains for documents, apps and system updates.

BATTERY Battery health

Battery condition is particularly important with refurbished laptops.

SOFTWARE Supported OS

Verify that the operating system can still receive important security updates.

CHARGER Power adapter

Confirm that a compatible charger is included in the advertised price.

WARRANTY Return protection

Know what happens if the laptop arrives damaged or stops functioning shortly after delivery.

12 · FREE, DISCOUNTED OR FINANCED?

Calculate the amount you will actually pay.

“Free laptop” can describe very different arrangements. Some offers have a $0 device price. Others require shipping, membership, service, enrollment or another payment.

13 · PROVING ELIGIBILITY

A legitimate program should explain why it needs your documents.

A low-income computer program may ask for proof that you meet its requirements. Accepted proof differs by organization.

  • SNAP participation statement
  • Medicaid documentation
  • Income documentation
  • School enrollment when relevant
  • Identity or address information
  • Other program-specific documentation
IMPORTANT DISTINCTION Showing an EBT card may demonstrate a connection to benefits. It does not prove that every laptop offer is legitimate.

Confirm the organization and its eligibility policy before sending copies of benefit documents or identification.

VERIFY
14 · PROTECT YOUR INFORMATION

A laptop offer can be replaced. Your identity is harder to replace.

Low-income assistance applications can involve benefit letters, household details, income information and identification.

Before submitting those documents, identify the organization, understand what program you are applying for and confirm why each piece of information is required.

Be cautious if an unknown website asks for online banking passwords, EBT PINs, email passwords or unrelated account credentials as a condition for receiving a laptop.

15 · CLAIMS TO QUESTION

“Government laptop” is a phrase, not proof of government sponsorship.

01 “Every EBT holder qualifies”

A legitimate device program should explain its own eligibility requirements.

02 “ACP applications are open”

ACP ended in 2024 and is not a current federal enrollment option.

03 “Use SNAP funds to buy your laptop”

SNAP food benefits are not a computer-purchase benefit.

04 No model or specifications

A generic laptop image does not tell you what device you will actually receive.

05 Hidden recurring payment

Review whether the hardware depends on a paid plan, subscription or membership.

06 Requests for your EBT PIN

Do not treat a request for sensitive benefit credentials as normal proof of laptop eligibility.

16 · A BETTER WAY TO SEARCH

Search for the organization and the program before chasing the device.

01

Identify your need

Decide whether you need a laptop for school, employment, remote work, healthcare access or general home use.

02

Look locally first

Schools, libraries, colleges and community organizations may know about device programs serving your specific area.

03

Check the eligibility rule

Find out whether the program accepts SNAP, Medicaid, income documentation or another measure of financial need.

04

Inspect the laptop terms

Verify whether the computer is free, discounted, refurbished, loaned or financed.

05

Protect your information

Submit sensitive documentation only after confirming who is operating the program and why the information is required.

THE BOTTOM LINE

EBT can show financial need. It does not guarantee a laptop.

SNAP participation can qualify a household for Lifeline and may also be accepted as proof of financial need by some separate computer-assistance programs.

The former federal ACP laptop discount ended in 2024. In 2026, households looking for an affordable computer should focus on current school, nonprofit, library, community and legitimate low-cost device programs rather than outdated ACP advertisements.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Free Laptop With EBT FAQs

Can I get a free laptop with EBT in 2026?

An EBT card does not automatically qualify every household for a free laptop. Some separate schools, nonprofits, community programs or private initiatives may accept SNAP participation as part of their eligibility requirements.

Can I use SNAP EBT benefits to buy a laptop?

SNAP benefits are intended for eligible food purchases. A laptop is not an eligible SNAP food purchase. A separate laptop assistance program may use SNAP participation to establish financial need, but that is a different process.

Does SNAP qualify me for a government laptop?

SNAP does not currently provide a federal laptop benefit. Participation may help you qualify for Lifeline or meet the financial-need requirements of a separate device program.

Does Lifeline give free laptops?

Lifeline is a federal communications program that discounts qualifying phone or internet service. Its standard benefit does not guarantee a laptop.

What happened to the ACP laptop benefit?

The Affordable Connectivity Program ended in 2024. Before it ended, eligible households could receive a one-time connected-device discount of up to $100 toward certain laptops, desktops or tablets from participating providers.

Was the ACP laptop completely free?

Not necessarily. The former ACP device benefit required an eligible household to contribute more than $10 but less than $50 toward the connected device.

Can Medicaid help me qualify for a laptop?

Medicaid can qualify a household for Lifeline, but Lifeline does not guarantee laptop hardware. A separate computer-assistance program may have its own Medicaid or income-based eligibility rule.

Can college students with EBT get a free laptop?

Student status or EBT possession alone does not create a universal federal laptop benefit. Students should also check their college for loaner computers, emergency technology assistance or other campus-specific programs.

Are low-income laptops always new?

No. Separate computer programs may provide new, used, donated, refurbished or reconditioned devices. Confirm the condition, specifications and warranty before accepting an offer.

What should I check before paying for a discounted laptop?

Verify the exact model, processor, memory, storage, operating system, battery condition, charger, warranty, shipping cost and whether any service or membership is required.
